Power

The Electricity Department of Government of Puducherry is a deemed licensee under Section 14 of Electricity Act, 2003 and is carrying on the business of Transmission, Distribution and retail supply of Electricity in Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe Regions of the Union Territory of Puducherry. With all the Towns and villages electrified in as early as 1972, the Union Territory is 100% fully electrified. The business of generation of Electricity in the Union Territory of Puducherry is being carried out by the Puducherry Power Corporation Limited, an undertaking wholly owned by the Government of Puducherry.

Puducherry:

Puducherry has access to relatively cheaper power from the central sector power stations of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), and Madras Atomic Power Project (MAPP); the smallness of the Union Territory avoids the need for an extensive network of Transmission and Distribution (T&D) lines and hence minimizes the technical line losses; the ED has a higher percentage of High Tension (HT) consumption and a smaller share of agricultural consumption. There are two mother Auto Sub­Station Auto Power Transformers (230 /110 KV) at Villianur and Bahour to receive the electricity and later the power is distributed by several substation(110/22-11 KV)  throughout Pondicherry

Karaikal:

The Electricity Department functioning under the supervision of Executive Engineer is catering the power needs of Karaikal region both industrial and domestic needs of the people. The power is being drawn from Tiruvarur grid of Tamilnadu. A separate Gas Power Plant has been set up at T.R.Pattinam with a capacity of 32.5 MW in the name of Pondicherry Power Corporation Limited. More over a Sub-station is also functioning at Pillaitheruvasal with a capacity of 110/122MW.

Mahe:

Electricity Department, Mahe is the licensee for the transmission and distribution of Electric power to the various consumers in Mahe area. Mahe region is having one No. of 110/11KV Substation which commissioned by October, 1989 with 2 Nos. of 10 MVA capacity power transformer and power is supplied to the entire area through 11 KV H.T. feeders from this Substation. The power is obtained from the central pool allocation for U.T. of Puducherry.

Yanam:

The region first received the benefit of electricity in 1956. Since then, the supply and distribution of electricity in the region was looked after by the Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board Which had an office in Yanam to attend to the works. The distribution of power was taken over by this Administration with effect from 7 June 1976. Yanam has no Inter-State Sub-station or transmission line on its territory.

Transport

Roads

The Union Territory of Puducherry has a road network of 2860 kms. Of which 65 kms are National Highways, 85 kms are State Highways, 39 kms are Major Roads, 288 kms are other district roads, 254 kms are rural roads. The road network within the custody of local bodies is 2150 kms. The Union Territory of Puducherry has a Rail network of 22 kms. belonging to Southern Railways. The Puducherry, Karaikal and Mahe regions are served by the Southern Railways. The Yanam region has no direct rail connectively, though it can be accesses from Kakinada served by South Eastern Railways. The Puducherry region is served by NH45A and NH66. The Karaikal is served region by NH45A. The Mahe region is served by NH17 and the Yanam region served by NH21A.

Railways

The Puducherry railway line is one of the oldest rail links in India and it was constructed in the year 1879 by the Puducherry Railway Company during the period of French and British rule in India. Under the supervision of South Indian Railway with the object of connecting the town and the port of Puducherry with South India and to develop the resources of the Puducherry Territory, the rail link between Puducherry and Villupuram has been established.

Puducherry:

Puducherry railway station (station code: PDY) is an NSG–4 category Indian railway station in Tiruchirappalli railway division of Southern Railway zone. It is a railway terminus of the Villupuram–Pondicherry branch line serving the city of Pondicherry, headquarter of Puducherry Union territory.

Karaikal:

Karaikal railway station (station code: KIK) is an NSG–5 category Indian railway station in Tiruchirappalli railway division of Southern Railway zone. It is a railway terminus, situated in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India. The railway station is located in the town of Karaikal on Railway station road off the East Coast Road (ECR) and the Karaikal Bypass Road. Karaikal Port is located 11 kilometres from Karaikal railway station. Trains are frequently operated to Chennai, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Velankanni, Ernakulam, Bangalore.

Mahe:

Mahe railway station (station code: MAHE) is an NSG–4 category Indian railway station in Palakkad railway division of Southern Railway zone. It is a railway station geographically located in Azhiyur, Kozhikode district, serves the Mahe district, Puducherry. Trains are available from Puducherry, Chennai, Trivandrum, Mangalore and Bangalore sections.

Yanam:

There is no railway line in Yanam region. The nearest railway station is at Kakinada railway station which is 26 kms away on the East.


 

Airport

Pondicherry:

Pondicherry Airport is a domestic airport which is located at Lawspet near to Puducherry Town. In October 2016, the Pondicherry government signed a Tripartite MoU with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and AAI in New Delhi to operationalise the airport under the Regional Connectivity Scheme. Subsequently, SpiceJet was awarded the Hyderabad-Pondicherry route under the scheme in March 2017 and the airline commenced operations from 16 August 2017. SpiceJet later resumed its flight to Bangalore from Pondicherry in February 2018.

Karaikal:

There is no Airport in Karaikal. The nearest Airport is Tiruchirappalli International Airport which is 168 Kms away from Karaikal.

Mahe:

There is no Airport in Mahe. The nearest Airport is Kannur International Airport which is 35 Kms away from Mahe.

Yanam:

There is no Airport in Yanam. The nearest Airport is Rajahmundry Domestic Airport is the only nearest airport for Yanam.

Port

Puducherry:

The Puducherry Port is a minor port situated on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal  about 160 Km south of Chennai and Comprises of an Old and New port and primarily used for coastal shipping. The functions of these ports is governed by Indian port act 1908 and is under all overall jurisdiction and control of Government of Puducherry. The cargo handled by the port comprises of rice, wheat, molasses, cement, sugar, palmolein, timber etc. With the existing port facilities, only lighterage operations could be done.

Karaikal:

Karaikal Port is an all-weather deep water port developed in an area of 611 acres and commissioned in April 2009. Karaikal Port is located near the town of Karaikal in the union territory of Puducherry, India. Since commencement of operations, the port has handled diverse cargo such as Coal, Iron-Ore, Limestone, Clinker, Sugar, Sand, Cement, Fertilizers, Project Cargo, Agro Commodities, Liquid Cargo and Containers. It is the only port located centrally between Chennai and Tuticorin at a distance of 300 KM on either side. The port is capable of handling Dry Bulk, General Cargo (Break Bulk) and Liquid Cargo with overall cargo handling capacity of 21.5 MTPA.
